The following step is not needed if you connect to the Chat by using your website browser.
PLEASE NOTE: If you use Rocket.Chat in Windows 7, you have to click on the “+” symbol in the server list on the left hand side in order to open this window.
You are now connected to the University Chatroom.
You will be automatically added to your department-specific public channels as well as to the standard channel of #rocket-feedback. More about this under the next item.
In Rocket.Chat there are 5 types of chat that differ from each other in a number of functions.
Users cannot create public channels.
Click on the Search function (magnifying glass) to join a public channel of your study programme (studri) or organizational unit (oe).
After you selected a channel, you now only have to send a message within this channel, or click on „Beitreten “ (join).
You can create a private channel as follows (see screen shot).
To invite users, just enter the name of the persons in the marked field „BenutzerInnen einladen“ (invite users).
To administrate a channel, you first need to select it and then go to the “Mitglieder” (members) option in the top right hand corner to either add further users or remove someone from the channel. This option is only available to the owner of the channel.
With the „Mehr“ (more) symbol you can set further adjustments for the channel. For instance, in the notification settings you have the option to put certain chats on mute.
To exit a channel, click on the channel itself and then on the „Mehr“ symbol next to the channel name. The symbol offers further options.
With the option „Raum verstecken“ (hide room) you can blank out the room temporarily. The room will be shown again as soon as you receive a chat message in this channel. You can also find the channel any time with the Search function.
If you are the owner of the channel, you can delete “löschen” the channel in the option „Rauminformation“ (see screen shot).
There are various ways to send a direct message to a user.
You can either use the Search function to look for the name of the user you would like to contact. This will work provided the user has already registered for chats.
Or you can click on the name or picture of the user and then on „Gespräch“ (talk).
Discussions and Threads always refer to a user message and can be created in channels as well as in direct messages.
To create a discussion, you need to click on the „Mehr“ (more) symbol next to the chat message to which you want to reply.
Similar to a channel, you can now invite further users to the discussion.
Exiting or deleting a discussion requires the same steps as with exiting and deleting a channel.
To create a thread you only need to click on the speech bubble next to the message.
Threads are visible to all users of the channel and anyone may participate.
You can share a file with either Drag and Drop or the „+“ symbol in the entry bar of the chat.
The following file types are permissible: *media/*audio/*video/pdf/txt
The following file types are regarded as unsecure and are NOT permitted:*Office documents (e.g.: *.docx, *.doc, *.xls, *.xlsx, *.ppt, *.pptx, *.mdb, *.pub) / exe (Windows Executable File)
For uploading and sharing your Office documents, please continue to use the usual: cloud.uni-ak.ac.at
To view the email address of a user, click on the name or the picture of a user. This will open a window containing the user information.
You can also use the chat to create a video chat directly in our video chat solution jitsi, hosted by ourselves, and invite the members of a channel to it.
Contrary to Zoom, the jitsi video chat is subject to Austrian data protection regulations. In case of difficulties with jitsi, please contact email@example.com.
To use it, just click on the „Mehr“ (more) symbol in the channel, then click on „Video Chat“.
This will open a new window. Now click on „I am the host“ and log in with your p-/s-number.
In order to accept a video chat invitation, click on „Click to Join“ in the chat; you then also have to log in with your p-/s-number.
For an efficient and comfortable use of Rocket.Chat, it is important to adjust the personal settings to your own requirements.
